The greatest advice for your relationship and marriage

  • By Pastor Sophia Okunowo

As a young lady, I just concluded my youth service, married and without a job. I spent most of my time trying to read one book on marriage after another.  My melancholic mind wanted a perfect man, perfect marriage, perfect home and perfect everything.

Thank God for God who in a way gave me peace that even if my idea of perfection was not in place, all I needed was Him leading the way. The more I read, the more I discovered a lot that I didn't know. The more I pursued, the more I discovered yet more things to be done.

All in all, following God's word is the surest way to a fulfilling relationship and marital bliss.

One of the greatest advice you can pursue in your marital journey is to learn to celebrate your spouse. Be your spouses' greatest cheerleader.

"Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."  (1Th 5:16-18, KJV)

The greatest pursuit in your relationship and marriage is to rejoice and get excited about your spouse. Let your thought of him get you all smiles and bubbling over. Never seek to change or make your spouse better than who he is. Accept and be glad at who and where you are right now on your way to getting better.

Celebrate your spouse or fiance, let nothing be too insignificant to celebrate, cheer and clap for your spouse. It's an offence to cheer another better than you cheer your spouse. Be thankful always.

What you celebrate will definitely appreciate. Let none other be better than your spouse in your eyes. Celebrate each other. Let it be obvious, yes let people see and know that you are each other's greatest cheerleader. There is a lot this excitement does for your relationship. It rekindles the love and make it ever green. It makes your love blossom, with the freshness of the morning dew.

When you  practice this, all other things will fall in place. You cannot cheat on the person you keep celebrating and giving thanks for. Continual thanksgiving eliminates complaints and comparison. You cannot physically, emotionally, verbally abuse someone you are excited about. It is a cheap way of keeping yourself ever in love with your spouse. You are only able to celebrate your spouse or fiance when you focus on their good part.

There are a lot of things to do to keep your relationship and marriage being what you desire it to be. A lot of advise here and there and sometimes you get overwhelmed with trying to meet up with all the" dos" and "don'ts" Most of the time when you read relationship books, you are eager to follow the principles only to throw them away after a while. While these advices and words of wisdom have their very special and unique place in helping our marriages and relationships, we need to keep our focus.

In the bible, there are so many instructions, laws and wisdom for living a successful life. In fact, as believers, we live by God's instructions and are to be led daily by His spirit.

Of all the so many instructions, Jesus Christ helped us in maintaining our focus and pursuing one goal, when He said:

"Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. "  (Mat 22:37, KJV)

Therefore, make up your mind today, to appreciate who God has given you!

If you are yet to be in a relationship, learn to appreciate yourself. If you don't love yourself, nobody has nay business loving you. Acknowledge what lies on your inside as God's gift. That is when the communication of your faith will be come effectual.
