Daddy Enoch Adejare Adeboye (1942 &ndash

    Somebody shout ha-lle-lu-ya!”

He is popularly known as Daddy G.O. He took over from the founder of the Redeemed Christian Church of God Pa Josiah Akindayomi who received the name and mandate of the church from God in a vision where the name of the church was written on a blackboard.

Pastor E.A Adeboye was born in 1942 to Mr & Mrs Adeboye in the village of Ifewara, Osun State, south-western part of Nigeria. He was the only boy and the last child. According to him, “his family was so poor that the poor called his family poor.” There was so much celebration the first day his father brought an umbrella to the house. He had his first shoes at the age of eighteen years.

One day when he went in search of his parents at the farm, he almost lost his was but a mysterious white dog led him to where his parents were and disappeared. It was then his parents knew he was a special child.

He was the only one that wanted to go to school and he gave his all to achieve this. He cut firewood from the farm and sold in the market to make money to help his parents who sponsored him to school. One day, while cutting the firewood, he was stung by bees. After he was treated and was well, he still continued what he was doing. He was focused and determined.

In 1956 Pastor Adeboye gained admission into Ilesha Grammar School, Ilesha, Osun State. He had passion for books and an aptitude for science especially Mathematics.

In 1967, he obtained Bsc Degree in Mathematics from University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Eastern part of Nigeria and married his wife – Mrs Foluke Adenike Adeboye (Nee Adeyokunnu) in the same year. In 1969, he had his Msc Degree in Hydrodynamics in the University of Lagos (UNILAG) . In 1975, he had his Ph.D in Applied Mathematics in the Same University. Pastor Adeboye had a vague knowledge of God's existence. He knew there was God in Heaven but he did not know he needed a relationship with God.

In 1973, after attempting several diabolical means to protect himself from danger which was unsuccessful, he and his wife walked into a church – The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) to seek divine intervention for their lives. There he was ministered to through the message preached by Pa Josiah Akindayomi and immediately, he gave his life to Christ together with his wife. They both joined RCCG and were baptized with water by immersion. Unknown to him, the Lord already informed Pa Akindayomi of his joining the church and take over the Mantle from him when Pa Akindayomi passed away. Pastor Adeboye served as an interpreter for the founder for a few years after which he was ordained as a pastor in the church.

In 1977, after his ordination as a Pastor over RCCG, Pastor Enoch pioneered Bible Study meetings, Crusades, Revivals, Outreaches and the evangelistic programs known as the Congress all over the cities in Nigeria.

In 1980, RCCG had had about 42 Parishes. That same year, the founder – Pa Akindayomi passed on. Despite the founder's instructions sealed in a document that Pastor Adeboye should take over from him, Pastor Adeboye's transition into office was not smooth. He had oppositions from some members of the church board which after some time had to submit God's perfect will.

In 1981, he was ordained the General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God and his results from God's backing shut up every opposition. He introduced innovations into the ministry and created balance where by elites and professionals could still worship God despite their other business. The led to the establishment of model parishes across the world through which many especially those in high positions have come to know the Lord. The poor, needy and downtrodden were not left out.

In the mid 1980s, the Holy Ghost Services started. These services comprised Praise, Worship, Prayer, Soul-winning, Deliverance, Testimonies and the Word once a month usually held at night. It started at the Headquarters of the church in Lagos but due to space constraint, it was moved to a location along Lagos – Ibadan Express way, popularly known and called Redemption Camp where many gather all over the world to attend the Holy Ghost service. These services have been consistently held there for over 20years and the number of attendees tripled yearly.

On 18th December 1998, Pastor Enoch hosted the very first Holy Ghost Festival (open air meeting) in Nigeria with over 7million attendees (CNN estimate).

In 1999 there were at least twelve million worshipers present. The program has been replaced with the annual 3-day Holy Ghost Congress held every December at the Redemption Camp. In addition to this is a Special 3-day Holy Ghost Program held in the first weekend of March yearly. All these programs always ended with testimonies.

One day, He was led to the beach by God and was instructed to write his name in the sand which he obeyed. The Lord instructed him to clean away his name from the sand and he obeyed. Then the Lord told him that that is how he (God) can wipe off his (Pastor Adeboye) name from the surface of the earth if he (Pastor Adeboye) failed to give glory to Him (God) and God lifts him up.

To date, all over the world Enoch Adeboye has been conferred with several honorary degrees and national merit awards in appreciation of his contributions to humanity.
