The Song That Made Me Cry

Yesterday, I was at Professor Niyi Osundare's public lecture organised by the department of English, University of Ibadan and it was titled “Nature, the Ultimate Metaphor: Literature and the Ecological Imperative.” The content of the lecture is not really my focus here. It was what happened before the lecture began that really got to me. It was the moment when we all sang our National Anthem.

The National Anthem had never made so much sense to me up until yesterday and it had such an impact because of the terrible things I had seen about the Plateau killings on social media. So, as we sang the second stanza of the National Anthem I found my heart crying out to God and praying the prayer with all my heart that the God of creation will really intervene in our nation, that He will guide our leaders right and that the Truth Himself which is Jesus would be revealed to our youths by the Holy Spirit and that the Prince of peace will cause peace and justice to reign in our nation.

Even if you do not have a prayer point for Nigeria, sing the second stanza of the national anthem and mean it with all your heart. Really meditate on the lyrics and let the words sink down deep into your spirit. Dear Christian, pray for your country. What happens to one of us happens to all of us.

LYRICS OF THE SECOND STANZA OF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM

Oh God of creation

Direct our noble cause

Guide our leaders right

Help our youths the truth to know

In love and honesty to grow

And living just and true

Great lofty heights attain

To build a nation where peace

And justice shall reign
