Sudanese Woman gets award for standing in faith

A Sudanese Christian woman, who made international headlines last year for refusing to deny her faith while in prison, will be awarded the National Religious Broadcasters’ President’s Award.
Meriam Ibrahim was jailed for claiming to be a Christian, while her father was Muslim. According to Sudan law, Ibrahim was Muslim by blood, though her father left the family when Ibrahim was young.
She was in prison for months, refusing to renounce Christ, though she was sentenced to death and pregnant at the time. Ibrahim was later released and granted asylum in the United States; her husband is a US citizen.
Reports have it that National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) has named Ibrahim the recipient of the 2014 President’s Award for her refusal to renounce her faith.
"Meriam Ibrahim is a modern-day example of what it means to not be ashamed of Christ," said NRB President and CEO Jerry A Johnson. "We are honoured to welcome her to NRB15 as we rejoice with her over God's protective care in her life."
In an earlier interview with BBC, Ibrahim said she could not describe the time she spent in prison.
"But there are others who are in worse conditions in Sudan than those I was in,” Ibrahim said.
"Sadly, this was all under the guise of the law. So instead of protecting people, the law is harming them."
Ibrahim is set to receive the NRB President's Award on February 28.
