  MAYA ANGELOU (1928 – 2014)

  On April 4, 1968, Maya Angelou's birthday, her close friend Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. This devastated Maya, so she stopped celebrating her birthday for years afterward, instead she sent flowers to King's widow, Coretta Scott King, for more than 30 years, until Coretta's death in 2006.

  Angelou had a good relationship with TV personality Oprah Winfrey, who organized several birthday celebrations for Maya including a week-long cruise for her 70th birthday in 1998.

  Maya Angelou died on May 28, 2014 at her home Winston-Salem, North Carolina after experiencing health issues for a number of years.

  The news of her passing spread like wild fire, even the social media mourn Maya's passing.

  Singer Mary J. Blige and politician Cory Booker were among those who tweeted their favorite quotes by her in tribute. President Barack Obama said about Angelou, "a brilliant writer, a fierce friend, and a truly phenomenal woman." Angelou "had the ability to remind us that we are all God's children; that we all have something to offer,".
